A beautiful door sets the tone to a house and welcomes guests inside. Of course, most people do pay attention to their front doors but too often overlook the others. Whether an entry to a kitchen, a laundry room, or even a mudroom, a well-planned side or back door is a beautiful addition to any home. Yesterday, I was up in Bedford visiting my friend Hannah, and I just loved what she did with the side entry to her house.
A casual English garden of black-eyed susies, hydrangeas and climbing roses flanks a charming dutch door painted one of my favorite shades a green, Farrow & Ball's Cooking Apple Green. I just love that her garden isn't so perfect either. The flowers are growing naturally and look wonderfully full. I even love the grass growing between the cracks in the walkway. Hannah's a busy mother of three little boys, so what a happy and welcoming entry she's created! It even reminded me a little bit of growing up and visiting my great grand parents in North Stamford, Conn. Through a dutch door just like Hannah's, I'd walk into the kitchen of their old farmhouse, where Great Grandmother Searles would be baking seasonal fruit pies and other delicious confections. Ah, to be young again,,,
