Slag glass is a form of opaque pressed glass streaked like marble in shades of purple, brown, blue and, like these flower pots, a beautiful jadeite green. The name derives from the belief that these colors were achieved by adding to the glass a byproduct of iron smelting called slag. Produced as early as the 1880s, first in England and later in the U.S., it's often referred to as marble glass for the delicate streaks across its surface.
These pieces I found early this summer at a community tag sale just down the street from my Hell's Kitchen apartment. I love that they're in the shape of a flower pot but in two distinct sizes. The color also mixes perfectly with other pieces in my collection of Fire King Jadite. The smaller pots would look great in a medicine cabinet filled with Q-tips or bobby pins, while the large one is the perfect size for a big, beautiful arrangement of mixed zineas.
