We're pretty lucky at Martha Stewart Living. Every Monday morning, Martha brings into the office beautiful, fresh farm eggs from Bedford. Here's a bunch in an old wire egg basket I found antiquing on Long Island last summer. But egg baskets aren't just for eggs! Line them with a pretty linen napkin and they're perfect for serving warm biscuits or scones as well.
Weekend mornings, Jaithan and I have something of a ritual when it comes to breakfast. While he's on the sofa reading the Times or at the computer, blogging away, I'm usually in the kitchen preparing a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh ground coffee and toast. It's the perfect start to a day of flea marketing!
I love the color of araucana eggs, and Martha's are always so pretty, especially for Easter. Their colors could easily inspire the palette for a suite of rooms! Here a bowlful of eggs, cracked and broken, inspired a moment I found beautiful.
I rarely measure when I cook, and scrambled eggs are no different. Here's how it goes: I always use milk, a little water, salt and pepper and just a touch of sour cream. I start by melting clarified butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat. In go the eggs, then a constant stir with a good wooden spoon, making sure to scrape the sides so the eggs don't brown. Scrambled eggs should be light, fluffy and yellow, never brown. We like ours with simple seven-grain bread, toasted with French butter and jam. To serve the eggs, I used a footed ironstone bowl from a yard sale in Cold Spring, New York and a sterling silver spoon from my collection. The flatware is a mix of bone handled knives from eBay, together with brown Bakelite forks from the flea market here in town. And finally, the tongs for the toast are English Sheffield from a junk shop in Maine.
For the long weekend, Jaithan and I are off to the coast of Maryland with friends. We're hoping to find lots of great antiquing along the way, so be sure to check Monday for all our finds!

Dear Eddy,
can I get a permission for using a foto of the beautuful eggs from Martha Stewart. I would use them for educational purposes in publications on easter eggs in the German Journal "Chemie in Unserer Zeit" (Chemistry in our Times). I am an university teacher and of course my popular writing for future chemistry and biology teachers is (unfortuantely) completely non-commercial.
I would appreciate your support. Thanks in anticipation

I read this post and then headed to the Goodwill on my lunch hour. What did I find as soon as I walked in - an egg basket! It is beautiful - just like yours! There was not price but when I got to the register the woman sold it to me for $1.99!

Eddie,
You are so talented. More people need to be inspired as you are.
I love Martha's eggs, too. Do you know what kind of chickens lay eggs like that? We'd like to get a few chickens and have fresh eggs everyday. I bake all the time, and they sure would come in handy! Thanks!

I cannot BELIEVE that you eat eggs from Martha's own chickens. You're living the dream, Eddie Ross.

My Stormville scores this weekend included a collapsible egg basket and LOTS of silver. I was channeling my inner-Eddie.

I unknowingly chose that colour palette for my apartment... my bedroom wall is the exact colour of the lighter brown eggs - it's a warm palette that allows me to change the colour of my accessories. Furniture is black and white - add some mirrors, some deep pink flowers and art and voila - feminine without looking "girly"!!
I love that you use silver and good dishes for breakfast!

Lovely pics! The eggs are such a pretty colour palette. ( I know ... Martha already thought of that with her fab. paint collection!) Never tried the touch of sour cream in the eggs...mmmm...think I'll try that for Sunday breakfast! Hope your trip was wonderful, and that you bring back some treasures!

Lucky you having Martha's eggs for breakfast. She mentions on her show that she brings them in and they don't last long. Her employees snatch them up fast. They are so pretty. Have fun this weekend shopping I can hardly wait to see you find.

Are you going to the Eastern Shore? There are TONS of good shops over there, especially along Route 13 that goes down the Del Mar Va penninsula. And for great antiques, there's the Crumpton Auction on Wednesdays.
Have fun!

Another cup of coffee, please! I have always loved Ina Garten and her eggs for dinner with a glass of champagne like the Parisians do.
Eggs in my book are good any day of the week!

Saturday morning breakfast is also a very special ritual in our house, but our day is filled with soccer games and birthday parties!
Does Jaithan have a blog? Would love to check it out.
