Before we talk turkey, trimmings and table settings, I thought I might indulge myself in a little R&R this week. Maybe head down to my beach house. You know the one—that cute bungalow down the street from my castle in the clouds. And in case you want to visit, there’s a light-filled guest room, decorated in lime green and white with a pretty lilac pillow I had made especially for you.
Well, one of you at least, because we’re giving it away! But this isn’t any ordinary pillow, mind you. What started as a story for the late Country Home about turning vintage dresses from the New York City Flea Market into throw pillows…
…then appeared in Lonny on our own guest bed…
…is now one of yours for the taking! Or should I say winning? But before that, a word or two more on all the thought, love and labor that went into this beaded beauty. Of all the great vintage dresses at the flea market that day, I chose this one for its color, sparkle and intricate rhinestone detailing. Pillows with that kind of work I’d seen at high-end retailers in the city for up to $400! So after a spin (or six) around the house as Cher singing Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, I headed to Calico Home, my one stop shop for fabric and upholstery. (Mod Makeover, anyone?) Now the beading on this dress had actually been sewn onto a sheer outer layer, so for the pillow, I choose a pretty lilac silk to back it and a rectangular shape to make the most of my yardage.
Serious craftsmanship from an unsung seamstress at Calico went into this pillow, and I love the way it turned out! It's feminine and pretty and not anything like my turn as Cher. Plus it's completely one of a kind and the perfect way to add glamour to a bed or sofa.
For a chance to win, leave me a comment, and we'll pick by random. Good luck, everyone!
That pillow is gorgeous!

I have been doing this since the 60’s. Who knew it could have made me famous….LOL.

What a genius idea! I’ve used antique tapestries and alter cloths to make pillows, but never thought of making one from an old prom dress! Hmmm… I think my moms saved all my old dresses, perhaps if I don’t win I’ll have to whip up a pillow of my own, Eddie Ross style!
Toma
LOVE the pillow! You are so creative! And I love the idea of recycling something special.

Better you cut up a vintage dress, than I. Just couldn’t do it, no way. Much too scary. But I just love the end result. It would look great on my bed too.

What a lovely, lovely idea. Thank you for sharing, Eddie. While I’d love to win that little gem for my home, I’m mostly excited about thrifting for an old prom dress now—I have a spare bedroom that needs some TLC and a pillow or two would go a long way! Thank you for sharing your talents. 🙂
HUNS love the bed ;)It has never looked as good. You seriously must have ironed the linens xx

I learned this trick from my Mother! She learned from her Mother. Her Mom would take her husband’s suits and retailor them for herself. This would have been in the thirties and forties. Brief memories of Susan Emma Renthey Roby, my Grandmother and Cora Flonnie Roby Jackson, my Mama.
Love the pillow and everything you do!
What a unique and breathtaking pillow! I could easily see it as the centrpiece on my daughter’s bed in Tokyo when we move there next June.
Pillow Love!!!
Fabulous style, love this pillow!! And is that lamp from HomeGoods? I used a couple that look exactly like it in a client’s bedroom…they are great!

When I was just out of college and working at Laura Ashley (it was the 90’s what can I say), and had no decorating budget whatsoever, I used to cut the skirts off old work dresses and sew throw pillows for my sofa. While they made a nice statement, none of them were this pretty – I was stunned when I saw the pillow in Lonny.
The pillow is gorgeous!!! I love it!

I bought a magenta coloured dress in thai silk that I only bought becauee of the fabric. It was too small for me. Am making pillows out of that one now! lol I also found two real nice evening dresses when I was over in LA, at the second hand store. And those I got only for the textiles too. I love shopping over there! 😀 It’s a bit pricey going all the way from Swden to USA to shop only though…ha ha ha. If I ever come over again I’ll shop til I drop! I’ve missed you posting on here. Nice to see you again!
back off everyone the pillow is mine!

Great blog Eddie! I love coming here and learning something new each time! Kudos on the great pillow – someone is going to be one lucky winner!
You are always an inspiration, Eddie. I LOVE the pillow and the fact that you “repurposed” a beautiful dress.
What girl couldn’t use a little green glitter in her bedroom? I love it!
The finished pillow illustration on my computer showed the color as green. Lucky for me my sunroom is lilac and green so it would work either way. I have saved some of my skirts to make pillows but never a fancy beaded dress. What a clever idea.
Beautiful pillow!
I can totally picture you singing and dancing as Cher . . . only because I have been singing that song non-stop (with a long flowing black tuxedo shirt on my head in lieu of flowing black locks) since seeing her in Vegas.
I love the pillow. I have a daughter,a recent college graduate who has been spending her free-time (the time she is not working her part-time job or applying for ‘real’ jobs) decorating my guest bedroom. She has done a fabulous job, but I can imagine that she would love to design another bedroom around that lovely pillow.
I enjoy your blog. Thank you.
Somebody call Bob Mackie! I can’t get that song out of my head now, so great!
A lovely pillow Eddie!
What a super generous giveaway. The Cher reference was very funny – if you can believe it my friends and I used to sing that song on the school bus back in the ’70s! Michele
Beautiful pillow and very creative idea indeed! Why do I suddenly feel like raiding my grandmothers closet to see what art deco treasure I might be able to turn into a pillow….I can see the beads falling everywhere on the floor. 🙂 Also, I love love love that white lamp on the nightstand. Who makes it?
Love the pillow. What a great idea with the dresses!
Woot!
So smart to use a vintage dress as your pillow cover. I may have to steal that one if I don’t win. 🙂
What a clever idea!!! Thank you for sharing your talent and the chance to win that glamous pillow.
Eddie! I LOVE IT! may the gods of Random.org smile on me! such a gorgeous piece of work.

So funny…so many times I have been shopping my vv boutique (value village) aka second hand store chain in Canada…
and have thought that skirt..shirt..jacket..would make a fab pillow…my friends all think I’m nuts and roll their eyes…but I know and you know I’m perfectly sane…just a little of centre, as designers should be, right?
Love the pillow….would look lovely on my daughters pencil post bed with the quilt I made her years ago. Fingers crossed X
Awesome pillow from an awesome flea market. Love your creative eye.
Oohlala! wouldn’t that pretty pillow look smashing on the guest bed at my house?! The room is currently apple green… But our next big project is to paint it lavender..to complete our seaglass inspired upstairs “suite”.
Oh to have something to place in my Home that you designed. What a great Idea.
Need a tour of Ya’lls farm.

This pillow would look great on our bed! It would provide the perfect splash of color to my bedroom! I hope this pillow will come home with me!
I was home visiting my parents over the weekend, my mother turned 60 this year and has decided she wants to re-do her living room (which has been exactly the same since they bought the house 23 years ago). She started out by buying a new couch – and now is slowly making other changes. This pillow would not only fit in perfectly with the room, but would be a wonderful source of encouragement for her. I know she would be suprised and honored to have this showcased on her new couch.
Continually genius!!
Oh I love it! I did a few pageants back in the day and I have a few little numbers I am half tempted to cut up and create some fabulous pillows. Thanks for the idea and I hope I win!
What a very nice looking pillow and it would look great on my newly painted room and what a great idea too! Now I know what to do with vintage textile scraps and old drapery fabrics that I come across yard sales.

Hey Eddie, I met you and Jaithan last Christmas in Bergdorf and you so kindly posed for a picture with me. I sent it to all my buddies and they said, “Who is Eddie Ross?” They wouldn’t say it this year; you are so popular!
Thanks for your kindness and I love the pillow!
What a wonderful way to recycle those vintage clothes! I, too, in the past have used vintage fabrics to make pillows. It’s a wonderful way to perk up a room!
Your’s is beautiful beyond anything I crudely created! I even used Bounty towels as a pillow form to make bolsters!
It’s absolutely stunning and a scathingly brilliant concept on making a pillow.
