Before we talk turkey, trimmings and table settings, I thought I might indulge myself in a little R&R this week. Maybe head down to my beach house. You know the one—that cute bungalow down the street from my castle in the clouds. And in case you want to visit, there’s a light-filled guest room, decorated in lime green and white with a pretty lilac pillow I had made especially for you.
Well, one of you at least, because we’re giving it away! But this isn’t any ordinary pillow, mind you. What started as a story for the late Country Home about turning vintage dresses from the New York City Flea Market into throw pillows…
…then appeared in Lonny on our own guest bed…
…is now one of yours for the taking! Or should I say winning? But before that, a word or two more on all the thought, love and labor that went into this beaded beauty. Of all the great vintage dresses at the flea market that day, I chose this one for its color, sparkle and intricate rhinestone detailing. Pillows with that kind of work I’d seen at high-end retailers in the city for up to $400! So after a spin (or six) around the house as Cher singing Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, I headed to Calico Home, my one stop shop for fabric and upholstery. (Mod Makeover, anyone?) Now the beading on this dress had actually been sewn onto a sheer outer layer, so for the pillow, I choose a pretty lilac silk to back it and a rectangular shape to make the most of my yardage.
Serious craftsmanship from an unsung seamstress at Calico went into this pillow, and I love the way it turned out! It's feminine and pretty and not anything like my turn as Cher. Plus it's completely one of a kind and the perfect way to add glamour to a bed or sofa.
For a chance to win, leave me a comment, and we'll pick by random. Good luck, everyone!

Thanks for the giveaway! This pillow is fabulous!

So funny...so many times I have been shopping my vv boutique (value village) aka second hand store chain in Canada...
and have thought that skirt..shirt..jacket..would make a fab pillow...my friends all think I'm nuts and roll their eyes...but I know and you know I'm perfectly sane...just a little of centre, as designers should be, right?
Love the pillow....would look lovely on my daughters pencil post bed with the quilt I made her years ago. Fingers crossed X

Why do I suddenly feel like raiding my grandmothers closet to see what art deco treasure I might be able to turn into a pillow....I can see the beads falling everywhere on the floor. :) Also, I love love love that white lamp on the nightstand. Who makes it?

What a super generous giveaway. The Cher reference was very funny - if you can believe it my friends and I used to sing that song on the school bus back in the '70s! Michele
Posted by: my notting hill | November 02, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Somebody call Bob Mackie! I can't get that song out of my head now, so great!
A lovely pillow Eddie!

I love the pillow. I have a daughter,a recent college graduate who has been spending her free-time (the time she is not working her part-time job or applying for 'real' jobs) decorating my guest bedroom. She has done a fabulous job, but I can imagine that she would love to design another bedroom around that lovely pillow.
I enjoy your blog. Thank you.
Posted by: Kathy | November 02, 2009 at 10:54 PM
I can totally picture you singing and dancing as Cher . . . only because I have been singing that song non-stop (with a long flowing black tuxedo shirt on my head in lieu of flowing black locks) since seeing her in Vegas.

Beautiful pillow!
Posted by: Mari | November 02, 2009 at 10:40 PM
The finished pillow illustration on my computer showed the color as green. Lucky for me my sunroom is lilac and green so it would work either way. I have saved some of my skirts to make pillows but never a fancy beaded dress. What a clever idea.
