Turquoise?
or yellow?
That was the question on all of our minds when photographer Mikki Duisterhof, Woman's Day editor Ayn-Monique Klahre and I compared cover tries during an Easter shoot at our house/studio in January.
The editors eventually chose turquoise, tweaking the color slightly so it popped on newsstands.
You'd never know it from the Easter egg workshop in our kitchen, but...
...on the day of the shoot, we had about 25 inches of snow in 12 hours!
That's our assistant's car under there.
So while the icicles grew longer and even more spectacular outside our windows...
...inside, we readied paper mâché and plastic egg boxes for adornment.
Some we glittered...
...others we covered in Caspari napkins.
Getting to the point outside...
...and inside too.
Vintage silverplate bread baskets got a modern makeover filled with candy and decorated eggs.
Here are two we made that didn't appear in the magazine.
And one that did!
There's nothing like a hard day of glittering to work up an appetite. Here's Ayn-Monique toting a generous dish of scalloped potatoes that tasted just as good as they looked. Recipe here.
Her "skirt" I fashioned from a vintage dish towel, pinned in place.
While the food editors from Woman's Day worked their magic with a batch of warm cheddar and chive buttermilk biscuits...
...I started pulling props for the buffet.
On Sunday, we're having six friends for Easter, and I'm making every dish from the shoot.
Here's the table I set in the kitchen for Woman's Day, but we'll be eating in the dining room where it's more formal.
Come back on Wednesday to see how it all turns out! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, and Happy Easter!

I love it when I get to go behind the scenes with you Eddie! I did some big paper eggs from the craft store in Pierre Deux paper napkins this year. They are so pretty and friends think they are old old old. Yaay!
That snow made for such pretty light indoors and big appetites for such good food too I see!

Gorgeous Easter feature in Woman's Day. The turquoise and Kelly green is perfection in my book! Love the different textures you selected for the eggs too. Congrats!

Eddie,
Did you move? If so, when? I have been out of the country a lot this year and must have missed it. Did you blog about it?
Posted by: Janette@the2seasons | April 25, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Love it! The snow just cracks me up. Such is the magazine cycle. My mother got Woman's Day for years when I was younger and I always thought it was a bit fuddy-duddy, but judging from this, looks like it has made quite the turn around!

Thanks for the heads up, I did the credit for your pretty matchbooks gifties for your table at Lennox Hill Neighborhood house. I can't wait to see the next window in the D and D. Your table was so pretty, we had 44, which calls for a serious "Art Blendo."
Best,

Isn't that just a kicker with that snow? You must have just loved shoveling your way out after all that springtime in the house! I just want to know how you constantly come up with these fabulous ideas. What do you do for inspiration, so that you don't hit decorator's block??? Oh, and just saw you in the latest issue of Southern Living with the white and pink table. Great stuff and I love the concept. How you had a wonderful Easter.

I have many of my parents hand-me-down serve ware and always think they look old and drab. You do have a way of making those old pieces look so fresh and new again. Thanks for the inspiration! They'll be hitting the table a bit more frequently now.

Beautiful post! LOVE the colors -- I thing the right background was picked for the magazine. The whole article was fun to read and especially look at -- colors are fab! Hope everyone has seen the last of the snow now -- today here in DC -- 80's -- yikes -- hope it's not humid. Have a great Easter and brunch for your friends and family!

OMG love love love everything. Dam, if I had known you were doing a butter leaf lettuce salad I would have sent you the BEST salad recipe (used it for Christmas) with carmalized onions and candied pecans with these amazing blue cheese recipe from a chef in Dallas. I loved it so much I emailed him and he sent it to me. That whole dinner looks so tasty. Enjoy your day. I know anything you prepare and decorate will make everyone feel ultra special and taste extra yummy! This is the first year I am not cooking and it feels so strange. But my stomach will be aching for that dinner. Happy Easter.

I LOVED that article in Women's Day! It's sitting on my coffee table right now. I enjoy when you show us behind the scenes, it's always very interesting! I'm in LOVE with that green and white napkiin that's a little trellis-ish, it's such a wonderful splash of Spring color. I know you two are super busy but if you have a moment, stop by my blog. I posted about the antique/junk store that I frequent. The poor gentlemen obviously has hoarding/OCD issues but he has so many marvelous finds.
